The Women of Flores De Villa

Set in the dusty hills of Lima
in the land of ancient Maya
arose Flores de Villa.
Anaemic yellow flickering lights
emanate randomly from scattered houses
of veneer boards and rusty tin sheets
pressed against each other
along streets full of dust
filled with abuse, heartbreak and pain.
Amidst all this and more
the women
stand up tall and strong
in the thick of the struggle
with hearts filled with
hope and joy
to reclaim their ancestral land
and be free once again
to live with dignity.
